ollowing the devastating earthquake of 8 October 2005 which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of individuals in Pakistan’s Kashmir region, international assistance in the form of donations and all manner of humanitarian aid was organized for the injured and homeless. Given the imminent onset of winter in this rugged region of the Himalayas, survivors suddenly found themselves in an especially precarious position. In the days that followed the quake, humanitarian organizations collected several tens of tonnes of items of first necessity which were shipped to Islamabad, the capital on Pakistan, aboard a B747 cargo aircraft chartered out of Vatry. Thanks not only to the human and technical resources made available to NGOs by Vatry International Airport, but also to the responsiveness of airport staff in emergency situations, three other flights were organized, one of which entailed the airlifting of a mobile first aid clinic.
